„Cohesion Fund of the European Union: A Step Towards Our Welfare.“
The Project of Package I of Nemunas Middle-Course-Basin (2004/LT/16/C/PE/002) is the first project of water supply system of five projects to be implemented in Lithuania. Water supply system projects are being carried out in basins of Nemunas Lowe-Course, Nemunas Upper-Course, Neris and Venta-Lielupe.

Period from 2004 to 2009 is provided for implementation of Project of Package I of Nemunas Middle-Course-Basin. It is being carried out by Municipalities of the Districts of Jurbarkas, Kelme, Kedainiai, Radviliskis, Raseiniai, Sakiai and Vilkaviskis, Municipalities of City and District Panevezys, Municipalities of Kalvarija, Kazlu Ruda, Marijampole. Over 176.8 million LTL have been provided for financing of this project through the Cohesion Fund of the EU (80 percent of project value) and over 44.2 million from funds of Lithuania (20 percent of project value).

Purposes of the project:

• Complying with the requirements of EU directives concerning sewage and drinking water;
• Expansion of sewage collector and water supply networks;
• Reduction of pollution of hydrological river network of basin of Nemunas middle-course, caused by domestic and industrial sewage from communities located in this basin, as well as reduction of pollution of Nemunas and Baltic Sea;
• Reduction of pollution of soil and underground water and decrease of pollution risk for water resources in the project-area;
• Increase of number of residents receiving centralized water supply/disposal services and improvement of quality of water supply/disposal services provided in the project-area.

The project is coordinated and controlled by the Agency of Management of Environmental Projects of the Environment Ministry of the RL.
